Why Bhijams? Our Story, How It Works, and How to Get the Most Out of It
Moving to a new country is exciting, but one of the hardest things to leave behind is the taste of home. That feeling of walking into a kitchen and smelling freshly tempered dal, warm rotis on the tawa, or a slow-cooked curry made the way your family has always made it. For Indian families in the Greater Toronto Area, that longing is real — and it's exactly where Bhijams began.
The Story Behind Bhijams
Bhijams was founded by Priya and Saitej, two people who understood this gap firsthand. After moving to the GTA, they quickly realized how difficult it was to find authentic, home-style Indian food. Restaurants came close but never quite captured the personal touch. Tiffin services were convenient but lacked freshness and variety. And cooking every day from scratch, while juggling work and life in a new country, wasn't always realistic.
They also noticed something else: there were incredibly talented home cooks in the community — people who had spent years mastering regional Indian cuisines — but had no easy way to offer their skills to families who needed them.
The idea was simple. What if you could bring a skilled home cook directly into your kitchen? Someone who cooks fresh food with your groceries, tailored to your family's taste, right on your stove. Not a catering service. Not a delivery app. Just genuine home cooking, done for you.
That's what Bhijams is — a platform that connects families with verified, experienced home cooks across the Greater Toronto Area. Every cook is personally vetted, and every meal is made fresh in your kitchen.
Our Core Values
Bhijams was built on a few principles that guide everything we do:
How Bhijams Works
Getting started is straightforward. Here's the step-by-step:
Step 1: Tell us your preferences.
Visit our website and answer a few quick questions — your location in the GTA, the type of plan you want, your cuisine preferences, and any dietary needs. Our matching system finds the best available cooks for you.
Step 2: Choose your cook.
Browse matched cooks with their profiles, specialties, ratings, and availability. Pick the one that feels right for your family. You can see their cuisine expertise, languages they speak, and sample dishes.
Step 3: Pick your plan and schedule.
Choose from a single session, bi-weekly, or monthly plan. Select how many sessions per week you'd like (2-5 for monthly, 2-3 for bi-weekly). Then pick the days and time slots that work for your household — morning, afternoon, or evening.
Step 4: Set your household details.
Tell us your household size (1-6 people), and we'll match you with the right portion tier. Add extras if you'd like — extra roti packs, additional dishes. Mention any food allergies and your cook will accommodate them.
Step 5: Book and pay.
Review your order, choose your payment method (credit card or Interac e-Transfer), and confirm. Your cook gets notified, and you're all set.
Step 6: Cook day!
Your cook arrives at your home at the scheduled time. They use your kitchen, your utensils, and the groceries you've purchased. Over 2.5-4 hours (depending on household size), they prepare a full spread — curries, dal, rice, rotis, sides — everything fresh and exactly to your taste.
Tips to Get the Most Out of Bhijams
After working with hundreds of families, here are the things that make sessions go smoothly:
Have your groceries ready.
Your cook works with the ingredients you provide. Stock up the day before — onions, tomatoes, spices, protein, vegetables, flour for rotis. If you're unsure what to buy, ask your cook for a grocery list before the session.
Communicate your preferences early.
Tell your cook what your family enjoys, what you'd like to avoid, and how spicy you like things. The more they know, the better the food gets — and it keeps improving with every session as they learn your taste.
Use the bi-weekly or monthly plans.
Single sessions are great for trying the service, but the real magic happens with regular visits. Your cook gets to know your kitchen, your family's favorites, and your rhythm. Plus, you save with plan discounts — up to 13% off with monthly plans.
Plan for leftovers.
Each session produces enough for that day plus the next. On cook days, enjoy the meal fresh. The next day, you've got delicious leftovers ready to go. This means even with 2-3 sessions a week, you're covered for every day.
Try different cuisines.
If your cook specializes in multiple regional cuisines, don't be afraid to explore. Ask for Andhra-style one session, Punjabi the next, and maybe some Indo-Chinese on the weekend. Variety keeps things exciting.
Keep it simple for the first session.
For your first visit, stick to your family's staples so your cook can nail the basics. Once you've built that rapport, start experimenting with new dishes and regional specialties.
